2013 Volkswagen Cc R Line

On Friday Volkswagen will unveil the R-Line version of the CC at the Auto Mobil International auto show in Leipzig, Germany. Don't get confused – this is not a high-performance R version but rather a cosmetically enhanced R-Line edition.

According to VW, the CC R-Line has a more aggressive front bumper with a larger lower air intake and projector-style foglights with a chrome motif. Side skirts, R-line scuff plates, shaded LED taillights and unique 18-in. wheels help further differentiate it from the standard CC Sport model.

Interior enhancements are pretty much limited to inclusion of higher-end options, such as Climatic automatic climate control system, heated 12-way power front seats and a touchscreen Premium VIII sound system with HD radio.

There are no changes to the 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI engine. The CC R-Line is available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Like many others I am not as enamored by the looks of the mildly freshened 2013 CC compared to the previous generation CC, which looked much sleeker in my opinion. I guess it's largely the result of tough new pedestrian-safety regulations in Europe and Asia that require a stouter-looking snout on new cars. Hopefully, as time goes on, designers will figure out a way to blend in the required design parameters just as they did after 5-mph bumpers were introduced.

Volkswagen says the CC R-Line will go on sale at the end of this year in the U.S. Pricing has not yet been announced.
