Melissa lost weight with a prior Weight Watchers program When her doctor issued a dire health warning, Melissa decided to downsize. |
January 2006, I was overweight and facing serious health problems. For several years I had been struggling with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My blood sugar was dangerously high, and I was taking several medications for all three health conditions. My doctor advised me on several occasions to adhere to the diet plan she gave me, so that I could both lower my blood sugar levels and lose some weight. Probably like most people, I dieted, failed and just gave up.
At a visit to my doctor that month, she told me very plainly that if I didn't change my lifestyle, I would die. Her exact words were, "At any moment, you can go into a diabetic coma and have a stroke and/or heart failure. You must take your diet seriously."
It was at that point that I started to research the "diet plans." I started noticing the Weight Watchers commercials on TV and I knew that a co-worker of mine was a member. After talking to her, I made a decision to give Weight Watchers Online a try. I signed up for the three-month plan.
Quite honestly, I didn't expect to stay with it that long. I had a long history of starting and quitting diets and never having any lasting success. But this was the first time that I had ever tried the Weight Watchers eating plan. I was a huge fast food and junk food eater, and I wasn't quite ready to give up all the foods that I liked. After starting the Flex Plan, I was able to eat smaller portions of the foods that I enjoyed and still stay within my daily POINTS ® Target. You may not understand this, but that was very important to me. At the time, it was the only thing that kept me sticking to the plan.
After a few weeks, I noticed that it was working. I was losing about 1 to 2 pounds every week, and I was very encouraged. After just a short while, I started giving up my junk foods and making some healthier food choices. (I would stock up on the Smart Ones® whenever the supermarket had a sale). When my three-month plan was nearing its end, I was tempted to cancel and continue on my own. By then I had lost almost 30 pounds.* But thank God for my friend, Mary. She encouraged me not to do that. She said that I needed to start going to meetings with her so that I would continue to have success in my weight-loss goals.
So in May 2006, I joined the Weight Watchers meetings. That was the best thing that I could have ever done! I learned so much more than I ever could have imagined at those meetings. First of all, my Leader, Lucy, was incredible! She made the meetings fun and interesting and was always encouraging. I couldn't wait to go there every week. She was able to answer my questions, and she also encouraged me to give exercise a try. I learned all about how to earn and use activity POINTS values with my plan. I just started walking every day that I was able. Soon, I extended my walks, and eventually I joined a local gym.
Now exercise is the first thing that I do every morning, and I find I really enjoy it. My weight loss progressed tremendously. Of course there were weeks that went very well and weeks that I hated the scale, but that's just how the journey goes. I never gave up. My Leader always said that you must believe in yourself, and I found that changing my thought patterns and beliefs were a big key to success. My favorite quote is: "Whatever the mind can conceive, Man can achieve."
Around July 2006, I was tired of the Flex Plan and wanted to give the Core Plan® a try. So my Leader taught me all about the Core Plan and I found that I love it. I had never been a "fruits and veggies person" but I have found that there is a tremendous variety of foods out there that I had never even tried before. I purchased the Weight Watchers cookbooks and started trying different recipes. I was having fun, eating what I loved and still losing weight.
With my Leader's guidance and the Weight Watchers program, by December 31, 2006, I was down to 155 pounds!* As of May 11, 2007, my weight is 140.6 pounds* and I am very proud of myself. I love the way I look--I have gone from a dress size 24 to a size 10--and most important, my health is excellent!
My doctor is amazed! She has taken me completely off all of my medications. My blood tests are all "textbook" wonderful. I feel great. It is amazing how life changes when you feel good and have better health. Now I am a Lifetime Member. I'm more determined than ever to keep my weight off for good, and I believe I can do it!
